Here is the edited version of Hayden's birth story. Of course, I was hoping for a totally different experience, and I got it. Not exactly in the same way I wanted (I wanted less drama..haha). If you want full details, you'll have to come to me and I"ll tell you more.
The day before Hayden was born I went for my regular 39 week check. I was almost 5 cm dilated and the doctor couldn't believe that I was sitting in her office. She thought for sure I would have had the baby the week before after she saw me at 4 cm.
Late that night I got sick with a fever and vomiting. I didn't feel Hayden move for many hours, despite all of my desperate attempts to get him to. He was VERY active up to this point, so I was freaked out. I felt a tiny move around 3 am and finally allowed myself to go to sleep. At 7 I woke up and tried again, nothing. Justin went to work, my mom came to get me. I was going to get hooked up to the monitors at the doctors office. Luckily, Justin was able to get the day off, so he met us at the office. On the way to the office I had my first contraction (9:15 am). They were 5 mins apart until we got to the doctor's office, where they became 3 minutes apart. We heard the heartbeat (whew) but he was definitely not moving. I was whisked away to the hospital in a wheelchair where the contractions began every minute. After some room switching around, I was settled into a bed just in time for my water to break. By that time I was 8 cm. My bloodwork came back saying I had an elevated white count of 32,000. Normal is 10,000. Because of this, the anesthesiologist wouldn't give me an epidural or a spinal block. My choice was VBAC (which was the plan anyway) without medication or C-section under general anesthesia. I'd already been that route and wanted to avoid that if possible, so I chose the pain. The anesthesiologist sat outside of my room for the rest of the labor just in case he was needed for an emergency C-Section. It was pretty bad, as I didn't have any breaks between contractions, but thankfully Hayden was born at 1:15. From start (first contraction) to finish (birth) was only 4 hours.
During the labor his heart rate dropped to 50 and everyone came rushing in. After some very painful "fixes" it came back up and then I was ready to push. For a VBAC you are supposed to have internal monitors. I never got them, there wasn't time. I was positive for Group B Strep, but only got 1/4 of the antibiotics in me, and due to my ICU stay last time with Pulmonary Edema my fluids were restricted. Hayden's head came out fine, but his shoulders were stuck, and the cord was around his neck. The doctor was pulling, the nurse was physically pushing on me, and I was pushing and thankfully, he broke his clavicle and came on out. He had shoulder distortia and a broken clavicle. His broke on his own, and the doctor didn't have to break it, but she would have if necessary. At 7.1 pounds, he was too big for my little pelvic bone. Who knew? If you see pictures (I'm not posing them, they are scary) of him at his birth, he is completely blue. The critical care team was there immediately and got him breathing and assessed his broken bone. Hayden truly is a little miracle. Babies can die from Group B Strep, and his levels checked out fine. He wasn't breathing (Justin said if he hadn't just heard the heartbeat on the monitor he wouldn't have thought he was alive at all), and the doctor said that if his bone hadn't broken, he wouldn't be here with us today. Also, miraculously my uterus held up just fine with the VBAC and there were no complications.
We are thankful for our sweet little boy and grateful for all your thoughts and prayers. I know this isn't written very eloquently, or even very well, but it's written and the (basic) story is out there for you to know now.
